Drenched in Moonlit Rain — A Memory That Became a Poetic Love Letter

Girl drenched in moonlit rain by the river — poetic Tamil love letter scene.

A letter written under moonlit rain — where memories drench deeper than words.

A letter written under moonlit rain — where memories drench deeper than words.

(Every drop of that night still writes itself inside my heart… and now, on this page)

To Nilavan, from your Vairamalli (who believes love exists),

A thousand crore kisses to you.

I cannot prevent your gaze from falling on many, but I can prevent my love from falling on anyone but you. In this life, you alone are enough for me; loss of relationships is my truth. My life, which was once filled with exuberance, celebration and joy, will ultimately end up silently suffocating, unknown, in a jar of loneliness. Let it be...

Whether 1000 kilometers away or 0.1 centimeters away, north is north, and south is south. Some rules are like that – unchangeable and not to be changed. How can one retreat after desiring to scrape and experience love to its deepest sediments and then discovering its depth? I am breaking and leaking only in words; in my love life, I remain steadfast.

My five senses are yearning and waiting for your arrival like polythene bags stubbornly hanging from tree branches. Every time my eyelids droop, my loving heart longs to run to your lap. In the cloud of my youth, the lightning of desire always flashes brightly. Even if the electrified cloud doesn't pour honey rain, won't my lips yearn to be at least drenched by a drizzle of honey?

Whenever I think of rain, I remember my village. Have you bathed in the river during heavy rain? I have. On a day when there was no thunder and everyone at home was a little drowsy. As a child, I categorized rain as good or bad based on thunder. When good rain falls without thunder, the dancing heart joins hands with us. When bad rain falls, we melt and call upon him for support, "Arjuna, Arjuna."

I too have called out to him loudly whenever it thunders, hoping that one day, like Shaktimaan, he would appear before me, lift me up, fly me over the thundering clouds, sit me on his lap, and say, "Look, child. You are safe now," and pat my head. It never happened. But just once, bathe in the overflowing water bodies during the rain. You will experience the pleasure of your body and soul being drenched.

It is a paradise. At a time when it is barely evening, with a little darkness enveloping us and dark clouds surrounding us, and when the rain showers us with water-flowers on our heads, the garlands of river water caress and slip over our bodies. The beetles and butterflies silently watch us getting drenched in the kisses of rain, holding their breath. Have you ever heard the raga that rises when a raindrop falls and dissolves in the river water, compared to the music that is heard when it falls and splatters on the ground? Forget about caste, religion, creed and just be a witness one day to the sight of rainwater murmuring and mingling with the soil water. You will be mesmerized.

All this drama is only for good rain. Bad rain, that is, in my dictionary, during thunderstorms, especially when it rained while I was staying in the hostel, I have cried many times. Not because I was afraid that lightning would strike me. I have shed tears thinking about my mother's condition, how she would be there, and whether the thunder would affect her in any way.

That was the time when faith in God hung around my neck like amulets. That was the age when I did not know who was whose husband and wife among the gods. I have prayed to Krishna with Parvati, and Murugan with Saraswati, "Protect my mother from any harm." Imagine in the days without mobile phones... In a situation where I could not immediately know anything about their well-being, my soft toy was my companion and comforted me... and continues to comfort me.

The moment I boarded the early morning bus after the vacation, my connection to home would be severed. After that, until I entered the hostel, my connection to the outside world would only extend to the bus's window seat. Even now, though I travel only once in a while, my preferred choice is always the window seat. Leaning against it, with my hand on my cheek, I would enjoy watching each house as we passed.

Since it was morning, the women in every house would have started their household chores. In my imagination, I would place my mother in their place, thinking, "By this time, she would have returned home from the bus stop... By this time, she would have started drawing the kolam like this woman... By this time, she would have gone to the river to wash clothes," and I would travel in my imagination while traveling on the bus.

I have never told her about this imagination of mine, nor about my fear for their safety. It wouldn't be good to tell them now. It's the same with you. Some things, telling you now would seem like a drama. Besides, isn't it natural for the old to pass away and the new to enter? When new, shiny stars are shining around you, it's all the same whether a faded cloud exists or dies. Near a glamorous, colorful ROJA, the fragrance of a colorless jasmine will surely decay. It's ok. Be happy. That's enough for me.

Sincerely,

Your(?) jasmine that has started to decay.

The Language of Love Beyond Words - Even Without Words, Our Love Speaks..

August 20, 2025 0 Comments

(This letter is a celebration of our unspoken love, a bond that doesn’t depend on ordinary words).

🌙 The Language of Love Beyond Words – A Letter to My Nilavan

(In this poetic love letter, Vairamalli writes to her beloved Nilavan, celebrating their bond that thrives beyond words and silence — a journey of unspoken emotions and the eternal language of love).

To my beloved Nilavan,

This is Vairamalli, your dearest friend, writing to you... Yes. Poets compete to write poems and songs about you in every language. But your silent language remains incomprehensible to anyone. Is language only important in business? Isn't it also important in love? It's okay if your language and my language are different. But without understanding, our conversation won't be enjoyable...

Human life is filled with conversations. Affectionate, fiery, poetic, crystal clear – conversation has so many disguises. It creates relationships. At other times, it uproots the relationships. A tongue as sweet as cotton candy can sometimes wield words like a flashing sword, causing pain.

But have you ever wondered how our relationship has remained undiminished for so many years, even without linguistic understanding? I'll tell you. We are fluent in another language besides spoken words. Yes... it's the language of love. Are you wondering what the language of love is?

The time I set aside for you is a language of love. The care you show towards me is a language of love. My dedicating creativity to you is a language of love. Your effort for me is a language of love. The tears we shed for our love are also our language of love. So, even if we don't understand each other through one language, I believe that with our five languages of love, we can savor this relationship for five more lifetimes.

Only in this relationship can I expect the unexpected. In that sense, I am lucky. Every moment, when I least expect it, you surprise me by showering me with the love I crave from you. I am a bit greedy too. No matter how much love you shower on me, my loving heart keeps expecting more and more. My lamb-like heart keeps wandering around your memories.

It's true that we don't share our love in words. But, we share and divide our love well through small gifts, words of appreciation, subtle favors, making time for each other and showing care. If only I could converse in my mother tongue, I could entertain you even more delightfully with many more interesting things. It's true that this foreign language between us makes us a little distant.

Even though it's a foreign language, those conversations are unforgettable. Like a  kiss I can never give you, your messages of love that I can't caress... they lie sleeping on my phone like kittens sleeping on a firewood stove that hasn't been lit.

Some messages with tender care. Messages that express unbearable surprise. Messages that reflect overwhelming joy. Messages that pretend to contain longing in words. Messages that bring forth bubbling laughter. Messages that swing between love and friendship. Messages with coded words that only the two of us understand. We have shared many messages like these that show nine different Navarasa emotions.

But there's one text message I particularly love. It was a small word in that big message I received from you one day. A love that didn't come when you used similar kind of words reached me in that single word. Yes... "Babe"... that's the word that penetrated my soul and thrilled me completely. How many times would I have teasingly called you "Baby, Baby." Did my words make you feel that thrilled? But, My entire mobile phone froze like ice and my heart began to race erratically.

Because you always use words sparingly (in messages only). You don't get emotional that easily. It's easy for you to suppress tears as well as love. In short, I am the opposite of you. But the moment you lost your control and called me sweetly from your heart, ah... you painted a beautiful picture on the wall of my time and made me experience a pleasant torment. Those moments that I want to travel back to again and again are an important chapter in my life. That particular day of that year bloomed with flowers instead of numbers in my calendar.

Even now, when you generally call "Baby," that text message is what I remember. Hmm... Okay, thinking you're calling me only, I've gotten used to deceiving my heart forever. Yeah.. living without showing my longing.

This bond is our treasure — a tale of unspoken love, a gift of silent emotions, and a lifetime written in the language of love.

Yours lovingly,
Vaira Malli.

(Earlier, I shared another love letter called Beautiful World for Me where I described how love turns even sorrow into poetry).
